Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you may have seen the buzz around ChatGPT - an artificial intelligence chatbot that can hold a conversation, answer life's burning questions just as well as most people we know, and even write code.

And although it may appear to be a fun and interesting toy to quiz our knowledge or how it can answer “write me a catchy hook for a website” to help us with our work - it can present some pretty interesting challenges to us, our business processes and the way we are secure online.

Here’s a perfect example that took less than 1 minute to generate:

This looks like harmless fun - but imagine this in the hands of ransomware attackers worldwide. This email is grammatically correct, uses persuasive language, and even prompts senders to input their own data (e.g. {insert link here}). This could completely change the way we receive phishing emails on a large, mass scale.

IBM reports nearly 95% of cybersecurity breaches are from human error.

Even with the wealth of anti-malware programs out there today protecting us against phishing and malware threats, many can only scrape the surface by checking domain names against lists to see if they are trustworthy or not. The actual body of the email could be looked over or even considered legitimate - which, in the hands of your employees, could prove disastrous. What businesses need is a comprehensive email and collaboration solution that stops attacks from entering the inboxes in the first place.

Ransomware attacks are no joke - in fact, it was reported around 55% of New Zealand businesses had been subject to a ransomware attack in 2021 , and that number is only expected to climb given ransomware attackers always stay one step ahead of us in the game. Business downtime due to being locked out of files and data, as well as the actual payment of fees to recover your locked data are just a couple of consequences of not being email-secure.

Each technological improvement brought into mass market can create the next, stronger generations of technology at a faster rate. ChatGPT is an exciting software that is growing everyday, which we should definitely leverage! Microsoft even invested billions of dollars into using ChatGPT into its products. But amidst other concerns we also need to be wary of copyright laws, data retention and privacy - and start looking at this technology as more than just a gimmick.
